Bob Dylan rocks the Fox

Last night was my first Bob Dylan concert. And what a classic venue for it – the Fox in Oakland. I had heard mixed things about Dylan’s performances – sometimes he’s great, sometimes he’s a grumpy old man. Last night was at the “great” end of the spectrum. The band was really tight – these guys have obviously been playing together for quite some time. Dylan himself spent a lot of time at the keys but occasionally switched to harmonica or guitar. Not sure exactly what kind of guitar he was using … a stratocaster body, but a buddy of mine said it looked like it had a custom, all-steel body. Whatever he was playing, he sounded locked in. For the most part, he was slow-moving as you might expect for a 69 year old, but from time to time he’d thrown in a strut or pose, almost like he was saying, yeah I’m getting long in the tooth but it’s still me in here. His voice took a few tunes to warm up, but by the time we were singing with him on Just Like A Woman, he was on the mark. The highlight for me was the band’s version of Masters Of War – you’d think that giving a 6-piece treatment to this classic would diminish its intensity, but it was just as cutting as the version on Freewheelin’.

How does it feel? Pretty damn good.

Here’s the set list:

Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
This Wheel’s On Fire
Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
Just Like A Woman
Rollin’ And Tumblin’
Simple Twist Of Fate
Beyond Here Lies Nothin’
Visions Of Johanna
Cold Irons Bound
Masters Of War
Highway 61 Revisited
When The Deal Goes Down
Thunder On The Mountain
Ballad Of A Thin Man
Jolene
Like A Rolling Stone

In the garden with Scarlett

Scarlett has already shown signs of being a lifelong gardener. But I can’t tell if she’s using the watering can for, uh, watering or if she’s pretending it’s a microphone. What do you think? (PS. Sorry about the wind … but that’s a San Francisco summer for you).
